Speed of light

I almost did a double take this morning when I switched on my computer at work and realized that the last week of January is already upon us. My mind boggles at the speed at which time is whizzing by.

One would think that the combined forces of the pandemic and the year's dreariest month in the northern hemisphere would make time appear to slow down to a snail's pace instead of defying the speed of light!

Still, my blog's journey is lagging behind as never before. We were only a few days into 2021 when these photos were taken. Oh dear, I really need to step up!

Sunday the 3rd of January was the last day of my 11-day holiday which, in spite of the day's sunny outlook, was making me feel a bit sorry for myself.  Even the fact that I was only looking at a two-day working week wasn't enough to lift my maudlin mood.

But once again, I found solace in dressing up, selecting this vintage flower and circle patterned frock from my wardrobe. You could be forgiven for thinking its main colour is black, but it's actually a delicious chocolate brown!

I took the lead from the turquoise in its flower clusters and selected opaques in the same shade. The dress came with its own tie belt, which I replaced with my zebra print belt to add more interest, and I wore a classic, gold tone and pearl vintage brooch pinned to its bodice.

Before stepping into the garden, I added a chunky knit longline cardigan and my beloved burgundy boots and hid my scarecrow hair under a black turban hat.

Speaking of hair, Jos's was even worse than mine, sticking out all over the place and making him look like something the cat dragged in.

There was nothing for it but to bring out the hair clippers in a bid to try and make his hair look presentable again. We both agreed that I did a well enough job, although I'm not about to switch careers any time soon. Also, it was now so short that he needed to wear his one and only woolly hat outside in order not to catch a cold.

Monday was my first office day of the year but, in spite of my fears, it turned out not to be too hectic so that I was able to catch up in no time.

Meanwhile, about 40000 people had returned from their red-zone Christmas holidays, so we were  holding our breaths. Apart from those arriving back by plane or train, a lot of the returning travellers were expected to slip through the net, and there was no guarantee that they would all be disciplined and responsible enough to get themselves tested and quarantined as required.

Trying to be as zen as possible about the whole situation, my spirits were once again lifted by the contents of my wardrobe on Tuesday.

My outfit was based around the recently charity shopped brown velvet skirt with its diagonal trails of lacy flowers. Still in the mood for uplifting oranges, I combined it with this funky pussy bow blouse - a charity shop find just after the first lockdown - which connects to the skirt by containing a couple of brown swirls.

On top came my fluffy greyish green cardigan, which was another charity shop find, while both the belt and orange felted flower corsage were retail buys. I was swayed by the belt's fabulous buckle when I came across it in a high street shop back in June.

Speaking of charity shops, the lure of them was once again too strong to resist on Tuesday morning. We try to visit them in rotation and this time it was the turn of a shop on the outskirts of the nearby town of Lier.

We were happy to find it reasonably quiet, so that we could browse at ease. Obviously, as befits any sensible and rule abiding citizens, we went browsing separately. Sometimes, though, it feels as if we are the only ones doing so, which isn't helped by the shop personnel turning a blind eye.

Pickings were meagre, but I still came away with a yellow, blue and purple skirt with a rather eye-confusing print. Yes, I am hearing you Sheila :-)

The purple necklace, as well as another one which is not pictured, was also part of my finds.

After having avoided jumpers for years as they weren't doing my hot flushes any favours, I am now once again in the market for them.  The striped one with the mock turtleneck, originally from Etam, was a no-brainer. As was the H&M Nordic style cardigan!

Wednesday was another office day, which was quiet enough for me to pop out to Veritas, a haberdashery and accessories shop a stone's throw from my workplace, before the sales zombies hit the town. These four pairs of opaques landed in my shopping basket, as did the mustard coloured knit turban headband I was wearing on Thursday.

This vintage Lapidus of Sweden dress with its yellow and tan flower pattern had been patiently waiting its turn. The problem was that it was slightly wrinkled and needed a quick iron. As you'll probably know by now, ironing isn't one of my favourite pastimes, so that more often than not a pile of items in need of attention is building up for months.

That morning, while Jos was doing the twice-weekly food shop, I not only ironed the dress but everything else that was awaiting a once-over with the seldom seen household appliance.

Needless to say, I felt very smug afterwards!

Apart from my new turban headband, I was also wearing one of my new pairs of opaques - the brown snake print ones - for the occasion. I kept the rest of my accessories in brownish hues as well.

Both the brooch and the necklace, which reminded one of my Instagram followers of liquorice, were charity shopped fairly recently. My caramel hued ankle boots were bought from the high street last Winter, and while I don't remember the belt's exact origins, I think I can safely assume that it was another charity shop find, as is the majority of my belt collection. Why pay over the odds for a belt when there's a huge choice to be found for less than € 2 at the charity shops!

I'm including a bit of label porn here!

The chunky, wide-collared, burnt orange cardigan was another pre-Covid charity shop find and was perfect to keep the chills at bay on a little foray into the garden.

What else did I do that day? Well, according to my journal, we stripped and changed the bed and washed the duvet cover and sheets.

I also pottered around upstairs, doing some dusting and continuing my eternal re-organizing, which is a bare necessity in a small house inhabited by hoarders.

These tapestry bags have been roped in as storage, holding things like belts, woollen tights and vintage slips.

Oh, and I started another book! I've been seriously getting into my reading stride lately, which often happens in the colder months. Apart from reading in bed - often nodding off mid-sentence - I have been taking my current read downstairs for afternoon reading sessions on the couch. I'm trying to remember to photograph the covers and share them on the blog for future reference.

So, that's it for now. Thank you for joining me on my little journey in time.

To be continued, as they say.

In the meantime, do stay safe, everyone!

  1. So fabulous outfits!, totally uplifting!. I love the dark floral frock with the burgundy cardi and boots, and You Rock Turbans!, looking so elegant and classy!.
Great idea to have a hair clippers, I've been tempted to purchase one and use it on myself (even if I haven't been so punk since my twenties). You did a great job and Jos looks fab both ways, his matchy hat and colourful scarf being so cool!
Love your psychedelic blouse and fluffy cardi and velvet skirt, so delightful textures and colours!
Lovely new tights, some interesting colours and patterns!
And love your 'portable sunshine' dress and accessories in burnt caramel shades (or liquorice!), and burnt orange cardi, they make a delightful colour combo!.
    Admiring your tapestry bags collection!.

    1. Thank you Monica! I don't know how you manage to do it but your hair looks far more "groomed" than mine. It's a constant struggle, but I'm far too scared not to mention clumsy to do anything about it myself :-) xxx

  2. That dark brown dress is gorgeous. I like the pattern on it- I would have assumed it was black if I didn't read otherwise. The zebra belt you wore it it is wonderful. All of your outfits are lovely. I like how you always pick a perfect cardigan to go along with every skirt or dress styling. You must have a nice collection...and those tapestry bags are so pretty...to pretty to be used for storage- they need to be worn.
You did a good job with cutting Jos' hair. I cut my husbands' hair once or twice during quarantine. I wouldn't mind doing it always, it doesn't seem difficult- I think men's hair is easier to style and my husband cuts it really short.
As for January flying away, I can relate. I don't know where time is going. I hope you had a nice start of the week and I wish you lovely rest of the week.

    1. Thank you Ivana! I do indeed have quite a collection of cardigans, the majority of which were charity shopped. I do agree about the tapestry bags being too pretty to be used for storage, but I've got enough smaller and prettier ones to use for their intended purpose :-) xxx

  3. I love that first dress - the dress does look more black then brown on the screen but either way that bright cardigan is perfect with it! :) I really like the yellow dress you wore too, and I hope that there aren't any increase in cases from people travelling. Here we are pretty much confined to Australia - the government doesn't let people travel overseas without an exemption as it's so hard to get back in as you have to quarantine so there is a cap on the number of people allowed back into the country, haha!

Hope that your week is off to a good start :) A public holiday here today which is nice, we will go for a picnic :)

  4. Ann, you wear turbans like no other! They really suit you.

And I love your yellow vintage dress. Swoon!

Like you, I have been reading a lot and am very happy that I have already read 6 books this year. I am trying to read more than 29 (the amount I read in 2020).

Stay safe and keep warm. X

  5. There’s a serious amount of clobber on your post today that needs to go on my pile of stuff. Like the stash of opaque tights, the organs swirly blouse, the Lapidus dress and the tapestry bags. WOW to them all and to you wearing them all so beautifully.
I’ve read in bed all my life. It doesn’t matter how late it is I don’t fall asleep until I’ve at least picked my book up. Funny enough I never read during the day, I’m presuming it’s because I’ve always been either at school or work and I thought it decadent. I have recently had an urge lately to build in a slice of daytime reading, so I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll get back to you on my progress.
Have a lovely week Ann. Ps. I’m rubbing the sensitive toothpaste on my teeth hoping that will help with the sensitivity. Dentist said I’ve no issues with them. Have you got any tips how you deal with yours xxxx

    1. Thank you Lynn! I've always read in bed too, and like you I can't go to sleep without reading at least a few sentences, no matter how late it is. I'm also rubbing sensitive toothpaste on my teeth - although I often forget - but that's about it. xxx

  6. Yes that brown skirt! And you styles it so beautifuly! I love bow blouses and a psychedelic print! So whats not to love when a blouse has both. You should see our hair! Gerben looks like a pancake and me? I'm soooooo grey and I hate it. And i can't wear it anything else then up. Oh well, the happier I will be when I can go! But that might take a while, have you seen the news about Holland, the riots? Bloody idiots!

  7. Fab outfits! I loved the brown velvet skirt with the orange blouse especially. And as for rummaging didn't you do well? I love your FairIsle cardigan. Your new opaques are gorgeous. There is nowhere left in my town to buy anything like that; our one only remaining department store closed down so it's online now. Loved the yellow dress and the fab eye confusing skirt, too.

    Can't beat a good book!

I'm with you on the storage issues too; utilise everything...

    Take care

Loving the chocolate dress and the new-to-you velvet skirt, the swirly blouse is gorgeous and the yellow frock a welcome blast of sunshine in garment form.
Those tights look lovely and that's a very posh iron!
Jon won't let me go near him with the clippers, he's been doing his own head for 20 years now although he did manage to scratch his head at the weekend with them! Love Jos's new haircut and his pom pom hat, it suits him!
I'm glad you've got your reading mojo back! xxx

    1. Thank you Vix! I'm on the lookout for more turbans. We bought that steam generator iron after my old iron broke down a couple of years ago, but although it's a pleasure to use it hasn't improved my love of ironing :-) I agree, that pom pom hat really suits Jos. He got it for free at the drinks warehouse last year, we just removed the beer brand logo! xxx

i do the BW´s head since ages with the hair clipper - and he wears a wooly hat in winter almost 24h per day.... #no central heating ....we both don´t need a hairdresser thankfully.
....this is the reason i do avoid the shops since the pandemic started - i can´t deal with this egoist/stupid people...... ok - no shopping is easy for me anyway as a non-addict ;-D
love to see you in the mellow yellow dress - its such a great colour for you!

  12. Last Friday I felt like a haircut. I hate to make an appointment, even more now. So while cooking supper I cut my hair myself. You wouldn't believe it, I've got many compliments. :-)
I'm not complainint that the end of January is in sight. The time may work for us considering the virus. It has been fading for some weeks and it is supposed to fade more and more when spring arrives.

Meanwhile I'm watching the falling snow ....

  13. The Swdish lapidus dress with the turban has a forties vibe, it's a unusual colour and looks great.
You are right about time flying. I notice it more on a week to week basis, one minute it's the start of the week and the next it's the weekend.
I like Jos's haircut. I've been cutting Philip's for years, fortunately he's not vain!!

  14. Although I love the chocolate brown dress and the yellow dress (thank you for the label!), my heart belongs to the middle outfit, with its perfect pattern-mixing! That black/lace skirt is just fantastic, Ann! And yes, you know me - I would not have bought that c. 2006 skirt. That pattern is too busy for me, too small and doesn't show up well in photos. Ha!

You did a great job on Jos' hair! He looks very fine in his toque. I love your turbans, by the way - I've been considering using the extra fabric from my puzzle dress to hand-sew one, or to try crocheting one.

I've been reading a ton as well - I've dived into a sci-fi series I haven't read in over 20 years, and am enjoying it thoroughly. I love reading in bed, don't you?

Hey, now that I've confirmed I can Zoom with Panama, I'd be game for trying it with Belgium! If you feel like trying a chat with me, drop me an email and we'll sort out the time/date. :) No obligation, though - I understand if that feels weird to you.

The days are just rushing by, aren't they? I can't believe we are nearly in February already!

  16. You are inspiring me to bust out my own turbans again. It's been at least a few months now since I last wore one outside of the house. No particular reason why that is the case really, other than that I've rarely dressed up during these quarantine filled months (which as someone who was a fashion blogger for several years, is an extra strange statement to make, lol!).

I too felt that January went by quite rapidly. Perhaps not as quickly (for me personally) as some months in 2020, but speedy all the same. I've fallen even more in love with winter this year, so actually kind of wish these snowy days would slow down. There's no putting the breaks on the seasons though, and chances are, we'll be inundated with winter weather until April, as that's usually the case in our area. So I'll get to enjoy the soothing serenity of icy weather for a few weeks longer.

Many hugs & wishes for an extremely safe, happy, and enjoyable February coming your way.

  17. People seem to be feeling that January was reallllly long, but I think it disappeared in a flash too!
You did a good job on Jos’s hair and he does look very cosy in his bobble hat, not all men do!
I love that Nordic style cardigan, what a great find.
I love the feeling of an empty ironing basket. I find there is a narrow window of time when the ironing pile is at the perfect size - big enough to warrant getting the ironing board out, yet small enough that is doesn’t seem like a daunting task. I always seem to miss this window of opportunity and end up standing there for hours!
